NFL Sunday Night Football Betting — Brady and Belichick

New England Patriots Football

Soap Opera Aside, It’s an Interesting Contrast on Sunday Night Football

By Charles Jay

The Sunday Night Football Game is here. Is it possible that BetAnySports customers can be beaten over the head a little too much with the hype for a regular season game? Indeed, this might possibly be the case in the showdown between Brady and Belichick, as the New England Patriots play host to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Of course, if Brady hadn’t won the Super Bowl last season with Tampa Bay, there might not be as much luster. But the perception among most fans would seem to be that in capturing the Lombardi Trophy for a seventh time at the age of 43, Brady proved Belichick to be wrong in letting him go, although all indications are that Brady himself took the initiative and made the choice to leave.

This Game begins at 8:20 p.m. Eastern time at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, and as an added attraction, it is the 50th anniversary of NBC announcer Al Michaels’ first call of an NFL game.

Tampa Bay is likely to be growling a little bit after losing 34 – 24 to the Los Angeles Rams last week. The Patriots are coming off their second loss of the season, as New Orleans came to Gillette and outplayed them, winning by 15 points.

Brady and Belichick — What Brady has to say

Brady does not really address too much in the way of rationale for him taking off for Tampa Bay, but the popular opinion seems to be that he was getting the feeling that Belichick wanted to turn the page. The head coach’s history is that he has actually released some players who has a little shelf life left, because he doesn’t want to wait until it was too late.

What Brady does say is that even though he practiced many years against Bellatrix defensive schemes, preparing for that defense and playing against it are two different things. Between Belichick and his defensive staff, there is a strong reputation for astute in-game adjustments.

Brady and Belichick — What the GOAT has done

Now at the age of 44, Brady does indeed look like the kind of quarterback who could conceivably play until he is 50. He currently ranks second in the league behind Derek Carr in passing yards. And the other guy in his lineup who played under Belichick – tight end Rob Gronkowski – has already caught four touchdown passes.

It is hard to argue that Tampa Bay doesn’t have the top set of receivers in the league, and that includes the guys coming out of the backfield. First-year acquisition Giovani Bernard is one of those people who supplies versatility.

Brady and Belichick — What the Patriots have to do

Last year Belichick took a shot with former MVP Cam Newton, a move that didn’t quite work out. That led to the selection of Mac Jones of Alabama in the first round. And Newton was released.

Jones is being given the chance to develop. He’s got a lot of maturity, but the Patriots are not looking to take big risks with him. Jones has averaged only 6.1 yards per attempt. And last week he was intercepted three times in the loss to the Saints.

What plagues New England is an inability to cash in on scoring opportunities. They have converted only 25% of their red-zone appearances into touchdowns. And wide receiver Nelson Agholor has not exactly put fear in the hearts of opposing defenses.

Brady and Belichick — What’s our conclusion?

Well, when you look at what New England has to do to make Jones very comfortable, it would be great if they could get a lot of balance between the air game and the ground game. Tampa Bay obviously knows this, and you can expect that they will crowd the box in order to force him to throw the ball down the field.

The Buccaneers have surrendered only three yards per carry, so let’s just say the Patriots have their work cut out for them.

Belichick insists his relationship with Brady is a good one. But from all accounts, it really never was a warm one. Maybe there’s some bitterness; maybe there isn’t. But we know that Brady is going to throw the ball regardless. The Buccaneers have put it in the air on 75% of their plays, which is tops in the NFL. That invites a little more scoring, and I’m not sure I can see them sitting on the ball and nursing a lead. So we’ll lay the points in this one.
