Will the Las Vegas Raiders Have Better Luck vs the Kansas City Chiefs Away From Vegas?

The Las Vegas Raiders didn’t have much luck on the Strip against the Kansas City Chiefs the first time. And that started Patrick Mahomes & Co. on a nice run. Now NFL betting folk at BetAnySports will have to evaluate whether the Silver and Black can turn things around in the rematch, which is set for 1 PM ET on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

NFL Betting — Silver and Black fails last week
It was quite a disappointing weekend for the Raiders, as they outgained Washington and didn’t kill themselves with penalties, yet lost the game on a late field goal (17-15). With all of their problems, they are still 6-6. And that is enough to keep them in the playoff race. Of course, the problems we’ve talked about have included the bizarre resignation of their coach and a possible vehicular manslaughter on the part of wide receiver Henry Ruggs.
NFL Betting — Chiefs still not in groove offensively
The Chiefs had a choppy offensive performance in a 22-9 win over the Denver Broncos. Mahomes had just 184 yards through the air. But the KC defense, much-maligned earlier in the season, kept chugging along. They have now allowed 39 points over their last four games.
And there’s something to be said for the idea that Steve Spagnuolo’s defense gets better as the season progresses. That’s the way it’s been as the Chiefs made the Super Bowl each of the last two seasons.

NFL Betting — Last time around
When these teams met last, the Chiefs laid a 41-14 beating on the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. The Raiders held things close for a while. But a damaging personal foul called on top pass rusher Maxx Crosby turned things around. Mahomes had 405 yards passing. And incidentally, it is the only time in the last six games in which the Chiefs have scored more than 22.
And so it is no wonder that this team has played “under” the total in six of its last seven contests.
NFL Betting — Raiders: Where are the big plays?
There have to be a couple of concerns about the Raiders coming into the contest. One is that they had only 50 yards rushing in the first meeting. And now they have lost Kenyan Drake for the season, which means Josh Jacobs will be asked to shoulder the full load.
Also, Derek Carr has been a much less efficient quarterback without the ability to go downfield to Ruggs. The teams acquired DeSean Jackson and Zay Jones to fill the pure “speed” vacuum. But they were held to a combined 35 yards last Sunday. Washington did a good job keeping Carr’s range limited; he threw for only 6.6 yards an attempt.
NFL Betting — Chiefs: Mahomes taking shorter steps
What Mahomes has encountered a lot of this season are defenses constructed to take away his explosive capabilities. So the former MVP has had to content himself with taking shorter swings down the field.
He is throwing for 7.1 yards per attempt this season. That is a full yard off his figure from a year ago. And it is 1.7 yards lower than his MVP season of 2018. He has already matched his career high in interceptions with twelve.
NFL Betting — Our conclusion
Defense is carrying KC right now, and the Raiders are a manageable opponent. But we’re interested to see how Vegas conducts its defensive approach. What has afforded opponents a chance against Mahomes has been to sacrifice things underneath while taking big plays away as much as possible. That creates longer drives, usually.
If you like trends, well, 12 of the last 16 between these teams at Arrowhead Stadium have gone “under.” We’d be going there even if it wasn’t the case.
