Great NCAA Football Action in Late Games
By Charles Jay
When examining our NCAA football picks for late Saturday action we have some matchups that force us to weigh the value of great offense against great defense, because some of these teams have one but not the other.
So here they are, with odds coming from our friends at BetAnySports.

NCAA Football Picks — Virginia at BYU
Odds: BYU -2.5 /Total 66
Certainly this game means a lot to Bronco Mendenhall, who coached at BYU for eleven years, as this is his first trip back. At the same time, it also means a lot to Kelani Sitake, who succeeded him at BYU.
The Cougars are coming off a very close call against Washington State, in a game where Wazzu was in a little bit of confusion, having just dismissed its head coach and four assistants for not taking the COVID vaccine. We’re not sure they are prepared for the offensive onslaught they’ll be facing.
As it stands right now, Virginia has the third most prolific offense in the nation, and quarterback Brennan Armstrong has thrown for 3220 yards (most in the nation) and 22 TD’s. BYU is allowing 66% completions, so it’s going to be hard to slow that train down.
And while their QB, Jaren Hall, hasn’t been a bad successor to Zach Wilson, he is not likely able to trade here. We’ll go with VIRGINIA to make this a triumphant return for Bronco.
NCAA Football Picks — Washington at Stanford
Odds: Stanford -3 (-105) / Total 46
Stanford seemingly hasn’t been able to get over its 31-24 victory over Oregon, as they have followed with consecutive losses to Arizona State and Washington State. But they have the benefit of a bye week to get things together.
We have no idea what gave anyone the impression that Washington was worthy of being a Pac 12 favorite this season. They haven’t shown a running game at all (3.5 ypc – outside the Top 100) and interestingly, the only game they have covered was against Arkansas State, which practically begged you to run (allowing 7.5 ypc).
The better QB in this matchup is Stanford’s Tanner McKee, who comes in with a nifty 14-3 TD-INT ratio. So yes, we’ll lay the points with STANFORD.
NCAA Football Picks — Fresno State at San Diego State
BetAnySports Football Odds: Fresno State -1.5 / Total 44.5
Clearly the oddsmakers are not swayed all that much by “home field advantage” here. You see, San Diego State committed to playing its home games at Dignity Health Sports Park (formerly the Home Depot Center) outside of L.A. until their new stadium is finished.
And Fresno has the much more dynamic quarterback in Jake Haener, who looked like he might be a fringe Heisman Trophy contender until collapsing with four INT’s against Hawaii.
But unbeaten SDSU possesses one of the more accomplished defenses in the nation, allowing just 5.2 yards per pass attempt and 2.5 yards per rush. No, they won’t scare you with their air attack. But they can grind it out with their running back committee, led by Greg Bell. We’ll take SAN DIEGO STATE.
NCAA Football Picks — Georgia State at Georgia Southern
Odds: Georgia State -6 / Total 55.5
If you know anything about this series, you know that it means a lot more to Georgia State than it does to Georgia Southern, which gives them a leg up right there.
When you see Justin Tomlin across the line at QB for Georgia Southern, you know you’re not going to have to worry about much of a pass threat. Darren Grainger is much more proficient on the Panthers’ side, and that’s good, because no team has yielded more passing yards per game than Georgia Southern, where Chad Lunsford has already been fired, leaving a lot of players wondering where their futures lie, as the next coach isn’t likely to bring an option attack. It’s GEORGIA STATE for us.
