Monday Night Football Should be a Slobberknocker Between Rams and 49ers
by Charles Jay
Monday Night Football is here to end Week 4 of the NFL Season. Things haven’t been as easy as some people might have thought they’d be for the Los Angeles Rams as they are making a defense of their Super Bowl championship. And of course, they never are. But they still have the basic rudiments of that championship cast.
The problem is that there are other contenders positioning themselves to take over the conference, and one of them (the Philadelphia Eagles) is the only undefeated team left in the NFL.
The Rams try to move to 3-1 with a Monday Night Football meeting against the San Francisco 49ers in an NFC West duel that begins at 8:15 PM ET at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Monday Night Football — About the Los Angeles Rams
Matthew Stafford seems to have picked up where he left off last year, when he tied for the league lead in interceptions during the regular season. he’s thrown five already, and take note that he is not the most mobile quarterback in the world, so he is, from time to time, going to be susceptible to being sacked, as he was seven times against Buffalo. The Rams took shocking shellacking in that game, and then had life-and-death with Atlanta the next week.
Another guy who seems to be picking up where he left off is Cooper Kupp, who already has 28 catches for 280 yards. maybe the Niners won’t be able to out the clamps on him. But the Rams need a viable second option in the wide receiver corps. And with Van Jefferson’s injury, one won’t emerge unless Allen Robinson suddenly explodes.
For the time being, Stafford may have to seek out his tight end, Tyler Higbee, who’s got 16 catches. In three games thus far, the Niners have given up five catches for 23 yards to tight ends. Last year they only allowed 65 receptions to tight ends.
Monday Night Football — About the San Francisco 49ers
The Niners have lost two of three games. The opener was a sloppy affair in sloppy weather, and with Trey Lance at quarterback they lost 19-10 in Chicago. It has seemed like Lance has been force-fed into the starting QB, despite not really winning the job. He got hurt against Seattle, at which point Jimmy Garoppolo came in and took over. It’s his show the rest of the way. So far he has averaged 7.3 yards an attempt.
Elijah Mitchell has been sitting with an MCL injury, and the Niners will have to get by with the likes of Jeff Wilson and fullback Kyle Juczczyk, as well as the “wide back,” Deebo Samuel, who will probably be the most dangerous offensive weapon on the field on Monday.
George Kittle is going to have to be a major player here. Kittle, who is on the short list of the best tight ends in football, had four catches for 28 yards against Denver (a brutal 11-10 loss) after sitting out the first two games.
The Niners’ defense has not faced a murderers’ row of quarterbacks, but right now that unit is second in the NFL in both yards and points allowed on a per-drive basis.
Monday Night Football — What’s the verdict?
This is not a huge vote for Garoppolo – at least not yet. But after off-season shoulder surgery and very little activity during the exhibition slate, we expect he’ll get more into a “rhythm.” And there is a “bread and butter” in the ground attack where the Shanahan influence has to prevail.
Stafford has the most reliable pass-catching option on the field. But he is also more of a wild card when it comes to giving the ball away. And the 49ers have something of a bitter memory about last year’s near-miss, which could have sent them to their second Super Bowl in three years. We’re going with the Niners, who have won six of their last seven against the Rams, as Sean McVay has no surprises for his friend and former colleague, Kyle Shanahan.
