The 2022 MLB Playoff Games Will be Entertaining; Can Dodgers and Yankees Skate Through?
By Charles Jay
There is nothing more exciting than MLB playoff baseball; that is, unless you don’t think baseball can be an exciting game in the first place. But at this point we are really down to the nitty-gritty, and in the expanded system, the winners of four playoff series will advance to play for their respective league championships. Those wins will advance them to the World Series. Let’s look at two of these series and their opening games, with odds posted by our friends at BetAnySports:
San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers (9:37 PM ET)

Julio Urias led the National League in ERA this season. He was the only twenty-game winner in the major leagues last year. he is part of an awesome L.A. starting staff that also includes Tony Gonsolin and Tyler Anderson, who have a 3`-6 record between them, and Clayton Kershaw (12-3, 2.28 ERA), whose plaque you’ll be seeing in the Hall of Fame one day.
The bullpen is deep as hell, and includes Craig Kimbrel, who might suddenly find his stirkeout grip (he’s one of the best all-time in that department). The important thing to remember is that the Dodgers rolled to 111 wins and a division crown by a 22-game margin without Kimbrel having a great season and with Walker Buehler missing most of the campaign. It’s almost embarrassing how loaded they are.
We recognize the improvements the Padres have made, and respect their road victory against the Mets. But we also know that none of their top three starters are taking this assignment. Mike Clevinger gave up 13 runs in 14 innings in three outings against the Dodgers this season. His teammates lost 14 of 19 in the season series, during which time they have hit .180 at Dodger Stadium. The Los Angeles run differential is over two per game. We are very tempted to lay a run and a half and get closer to even money.
Cleveland Guardians at New York Yankees (7:37 PM ET)
BetAnySports series price: Yankees -215 / Guardians +175
Game 1 price (with pitchers)
Yankees (Cole) -195
Guardians (Quantrill) +170
Over 7 Runs +105
Under 7 Runs -125
Guardians +1.5 Runs -130
Yankees -1.5 Runs +100
Gerrit Cole, who gave up 33 home runs on the season, should count himself lucky that the Guardians were 29th in the majors in four-baggers. Maybe he can pitch around Cleveland’s main power source, Jose Ramirez (29 HR’s, 126 RBI’s). Of course, most eyes are on Aaron Judge, who had the 62 homers and almost won the Triple Crown. Against Cal Quantrill, he’s hitless in five official at bats.
Cleveland would like to eventually get it to closer Emmanuel Clase, who’s got a 0.73 WHIP and 42 saves. Perhaps the Yankees will get lucky with the return of Matt Carpenter, who hit 15 homers in 154 plate appearances and had an HR rate that was better than Judge. But otherwise, we’re a little worried about all the Yanks who are banged up. This list includes Andrew Benintendi (wrist), DJ LeMahieu (toe), Frankie Montas (shoulder) and Clay Holmes (shoulder) , among others.
Cleveland has one of the very best staffs in MLB and is coming off a two-game series where it held Tampa Bay to nine hits in 24 innings. Terry Francona proved that small ball can still work. For the underdog price, I wouldn’t mind backing the G’s (on a 26-6 run) in this game or the series.
