Key Matchup for Lions and Panthers in NFL Week 5
The Carolina Panthers and the Detroit Lions will square off on Sunday when at Ford Field. Kickoff is set for a 1 pm EST Kickoff. It will be broadcast regionally on FOX Sports.
Oddsmakers opened the Lions as -2.5-point favorites versus the Panthers, while the game’s total opened at 43.5. The line has moved to Detroit favored by 2-points and the total dropped to 42.
Lions Look Push Forward Against Quality Opponent in NFL Week 5
In their last action, Detroit was a 14-7 winner on the road against the Minnesota Vikings. They covered the +2.5-point spread as underdogs, while the combined score (21) was profitable news for UNDER bettors.
Detroit is a half-yard shy of being the only undefeated team in the NFC. The Lions lost their last home game when Golden Tate was ruled just short of the goal line in the closing seconds against Atlanta. The game ended on that play. The NFL’s mandatory 10-second runoff was required after the review because the Lions didn’t have any timeouts left.
Turnovers have been a huge factor in Detroit’s quick start. It leads the league with a plus-9 in that category. The Lions’ 11 takeaways are tied for the league lead.
Panthers Hope Newton Continues to Improve in NFL Week 5
Carolina won its last outing, a 33-30 result against the New England Patriots on October 01. The Panthers covered in that game as a +9-point underdog, while the 63 combined points took the game OVER the total.
Newton passed for 316 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 44 yards and another score in Carolina’s 33-30 win at New England.
It was a great performance for a quarterback coming off a disappointing 2016 season and offseason shoulder surgery. Newton was awful, for him, in the first 3 weeks of the NFL Season. He averaged 188.7 yards passing and gained a total 46 rushing yards rushing. Newton threw twice as many interceptions as touchdowns as well.
Newton’s return to form gives the very good Detroit Lions defense plenty of concerns on Sunday.
The Panthers eeked out two wins while scoring a combined 45 points in their first three games. They were forced to adjust with Newton’s favorite target, tight end Greg Olsen, on injured reserve with a fractured foot.
