Islanders and Lightning Return to Action Wednesday Night

Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey

Eastern Conference Finals Continue with Game 2

The Tampa Bay Lightning thumped the New York Islanders 8-2 on Monday, and it was never close. If Game 1 was any indication, it may be a short Eastern Conference Finals series in Edmonton.

From the beginning of the game, the Lightning looked faster and sharper than the Isles, who had just wrapped up a grueling seven-game series against the Flyers two nights before.

Compare that to Tampa who had nearly a full week of rest heading into Monday night’s contest. Game 2 should provide a better indication as to how this series will unfold.

Islanders’ coach, Barry Trotz, turned to Thomas Greiss to start Game 1 of the Conference Finals, hoping to ride the hot hand after the backup secured the semifinals victory with a shutout victory in Game 7 against Philadelphia. Greiss was shelled for three goals on just nine shots and was pulled mid-way through the first period. Will Trotz flip back to Semyon Varlamov for Game 2?

It may not matter who’s in net for New York with the way the Tampa Bay Lightning offense is rolling. Two players registered five points on Monday, and the eight goals scored set a franchise playoff record for the Lightning.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

New York won two of the three regular-season meetings between the clubs, but this is a different view after the Corona caused havoc. They saw a Lightning team that’s been playing on a new level. They are using its up-tempo play and skill to dominate games.

The Lightning have won five straight games by a combined score of 25-9. The team must be wary of complacency settling in, even at this juncture of the playoffs.

New York forward Cal Clutterbuck blocked a shot midway through the second period and didn’t take another shift. His status for Game 2 is unknown.

The Dart Throw: Lightning 5, Islanders 2
