Geno Auriemma has been the head coach of the Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball team for 40 years. After UConn won against Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, he overtook Tara VanDerveer, former Stanford head coach, to become the winningest head coach in college basketball.
A celebration for Auriemma and his longtime assistant coach, Chris Dailey, had been planned for this evening. All of Auriemma’s and Dailey’s former players were welcomed back to campus for a celebration honoring both coaches. According to pay per head bookie experts, they have been with UConn for 40 years.

All of the athletes Auriemma has coached deserve his heartfelt gratitude for their positive influence on his life. For Auriemma and Dailey, the presents didn’t end there.
UConn players Paige Bueckers, Caroline Ducharme, and Azzi Fudd presented coach Auriemma with a framed Huskies jersey bearing the number 1,217 while wearing jerseys featuring her likeness. Nike gave Auriemma and Dailey a personalized ladder to celebrate the eleven times they’ve broken the net after winning a national title.
After receiving so much support from her loved ones and the student section throughout the years, 65-year-old Dailey expressed her gratitude. Past and present athletes were also honored for inspiring her coaching career. Taurasi, one of the all-time great female basketball players, spoke during the postgame party to thank their former coach and several other players. After a while, Auriemma was inducted into the global order of elderly goats with the help of a live goat. Over his tenure as head basketball coach at UConn, Auriemma has guided the Huskies to an unprecedented eleven NCAA tournament titles. He is known for his scowl-faced sideline demeanor, which he uses to snipe at officials and vent to the media about his team’s failures. He yells at his players so much that it’s surprising he still has a voice for interviews after games. Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, two of his finest acting roles to date, reportedly compared him to Ed Asner’s grumpy character from the movie “Up” a few years back due to his irritability.
After the Huskies’ victory, VanDerveer congratulated Auriemma, describing it as another remarkable achievement in an impressive career. With their victory on Wednesday, the Huskies extended their season record to 4-0. Sarah Strong and Bueckers were the leaders for UConn.
Strong scored a game-high 20 points, and Bueckers, a standout senior guard, contributed 16 points, nine boards, and five assists. In her first game back from a knee injury that sidelined her for almost a year, Fudd scored four points in thirteen minutes.
The Huskies will play Oregon State on November 25 at the Baha Mar Convention Center in the Bahamas.
