2022 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix

New Track Layout for the 2022 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix

By Charles Jay

Formula 1 racing is making a big move in the United States. They are on the verge of getting an exponentially better TV deal, and they have now scheduled three races in the U.S., and it wasn't too long ago that they had no presence at all stateside.

This is an interesting series, and perhaps it gets even more interesting on Sunday as F1 literally comes to the parking lot of Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fl for the Miami Grand Prix, scheduled to start shortly after 3:30 PM ET.

Formula 1 Betting -- The contenders? There are only a handful

For those not so familiar, the thing that makes F1 different from, say, NASCAR, is that there are very few drivers who can legitimately win a race. That is for many reasons, but primarily it has to do with the sheer power of the teams that are behind these drivers.

Ferrari's Charles LeClerc (-125) has jumped out to the points lead among drivers. What's interesting about him is that he is a native of Monaco, which is the site of F1's most prestigious race (there aren't many poor kids in this sport). He will start the race from the #1 position, which carries tremendous significance, and he has come first in two of the four races thus far (Bahrain, Australia).

Max Verstappen was last season's champion, ending the four-year reign of Lewis Hamilton, and he comes in as the second favorite at +180. Verstappen drives for Red Bull, which is a perennial contender among the "constrictors" (teams).

And Carlos Sainz (+700), who is second on the grid, gives Ferrari a great opportunity to score points and widen their lead in the Constructors standings, which is only eleven points over Red Bull, which has Sergio Perez (+1600) starting in fourth position.

So as you can see, it's a closed club, to an extent.

Formula 1 Betting -- Interesting longshots?

After those first four, everyone else is kind of a longshot. And clearly the one that is most intriguing as we move into Sunday's race is the aforementioned Hamilton (+3300), driving for Mercedes, whom we assume would like to prevent a downhill slide after losing the title to Verstappen last year.

And there is some controversy following him. Formula 1 has imposed a ban on drivers wearing jewelry in the cockpit, and Hamilton, who had threatened to pull out of the race, has expressed no intention of complying with it. The seven-time champion has had two mediocre finishes, coming tenth in Saudi Arabia and 13th in the Emilia Romagna GP in Italy.

Fernando Alonso won the F1 title in 2005 and 2006, and is considered a living legend. He drives for one of the "lesser lights," the Alpine team, and has come away with only two points in four races. That's reflected in his +15000 (150-1 at BetOnline) price.

Another former champion who has suffered by switching teams is Sebastian Vettel (+50000), who won the world championship four times for Red Bull (2010-13), and has sort of climbed down the ladder as he is racing for Aston Martin, which sits ninth out of ten teams with only five points.

His teammate is Lance Stroll (2000-1), who is a very capable driver but has secured an F1 ride because his father Lawrence, a Canadian billionaire, financed the Aston Martin team when it was known as Force India. In his last 21 races, Stroll has finished in the top ten, scoring points, eleven times. So he might be a decent play at +180 to earn a top ten result.

Formula 1 Betting -- The duel between Ferrari and Red Bull

It may be safe to say that Ferrari is the "New York Yankees" of Formula One racing. It is a team not built to promote a car, but rather they developed a consumer car based on the success of the racing team.

They've won fifteen championships, more than anyone else, but have not taken home the title since 2007. At the moment they are in first place with 124 points. So it's nostalgic, at the very least.

Red Bull, the relatively new kid on the block, fielding two teams (Alpha Tauri is the other), and they put more than three quarters of a billion dollars into their racing efforts. They have won five championships in the last dozen years, and they are stalking the leader with 113 points.

We mention all this because you better believe the Constructors' title is the most important thing to the thousands of people (yes, we said THOUSANDS) who work for these teams.
