Flames and Predators are Surging
A Western Conference showdown in Music City headlines Thursday’s action in the NHL. The Calgary Flames will look to end their two-game skid against a Nashville Predators club that’s won four games in a row.
The Predators have been near untouchable at home this season. They have posted back-to-back shutouts to improve to 6-1-1 at Bridgestone Arena. The surging Predators look to extend their overall winning streak to five games when they host the Flames. Calgary has lost six of eight (2-5-1) away from Scotiabank Saddledome.

Pekka Rinne, who sports a 7-0-1 record this season, turned aside all 20 shots he faced for his second straight shutout. It was the 57th of his career in Nashville’s 3-0 victory over Chicago on Tuesday. “We played extremely well throughout the game. We didn’t have any lapses, just kept going and generating more and more. For me personally, it was for sure one of the easier shutouts,” said Rinne. The goaltender owns a 7-8-5 mark with two shutouts in 25 career encounters with Calgary.
The Flames answered their 2-1 setback to Winnipeg in the Heritage Classic on Saturday with another loss by the same score three nights later to Carolina. Former Hurricanes forward Elias Lindholm scored in both games. He boosted his team-leading goal total to eight while extending his point streak to four games. He has three goals and one assist over that span.
This, That, and a NHL Dart Throw
The Flames’ are 6-6-2 on the season. Their woes haven’t been for a lack of solid defensive play. Led by goalie David Rittich, they’ve allowed just three goals in regulation over their last two games. Their offense has struggled to find the net. They’ll need their big guns to step up against the league’s top-scoring team tonight.
Calgary’s inability to hold a one-goal lead in the third period of back-to-back games has been underscored by the team mustering all of seven shots in the final 20 minutes over the last two contests. “It’s frustrating, the way they both went down. When you score one, every mistake gets magnified,” Flames captain Mark Giordano told the Calgary Sun. The reigning Norris Trophy recipient had a pair of assists in the Flames’ 5-3 setback to the Predators on Oct. 19, 2018.
For Calgary, they’ve had to rely on their top line of Matthew Tkachuk (4 goals, 6 assists), Johnny Gaudreau (3 goals, 8 assists) and Elias Lindholm (8 goals, 2 assists) to carry the offensive load thus far. They’ll look for a more balanced scoring attack beginning this Thursday against the Preds. Game time is set for 8 PM ET.
The Predators are off to a stellar start this season at 8-3-1. They’re tied with the Colorado Avalanche atop the Central Division with 17 points. It’s been their defensive core that’s led the offensive charge. Ryan Ellis (2 goals, 11 assists) and Roman Josi (5 goals, 8 assists) share the team lead in points.
Nick Bonino scored three goals in a game for the third time in his career after he recorded a natural hat trick on Tuesday. Linemates Rocco Grimaldi and Craig Smith adding three and two assists, respectively. Bonino leads the team with six goals this season. He was held off the scoresheet in all three encounters with Calgary in 2018-19.
