Inaugural DXL Frisco Bowl Could be High-Scoring
The LA Tech Bulldogs and the SMU Mustangs will meet in the Inaugural DXL Frisco Bowl on Wednesday night. Toyota Stadium, the home of Dallas FC, will host the event and kick-off will be at 8 pm EST. ESPN will have the coverage.
Oddsmakers opened the Mustangs as -5-point favorites versus the Bulldogs, while the game’s total opened at 68. SMU is now a 4-point favorite. The total has climbed to 71.
SMU has had a stressful time going on lately. The Mustangs are preparing for their first bowl game since 2012. With a change of head coaches since the end of the regular season, they have had more than just the normal game week prep.
Sonny Dykes, the Mustangs new head coach, will be leading his team against his former squad. Dykes coached LaTech from 2010-12.
This will be the fifth ever meeting between the two schools. Louisiana Tech has won three times. The Bulldogs won the most recent meeting 41-10 in Dallas.
DXL Frisco Bowl is Chance to get Used to New System
SMU won its last outing, a 41-38 result against the Tulane Green Wave on November 25. SMU failed to cover in that game as a -7.5-point favorite, while the 79 combined points took the game OVER the total.
The Mustangs finished the 2017 regular season 7-5. The seven wins are the most for SMU since 2012. It is the most in a regular season since 2011.
Only nine days will have passed between Dykes’ hiring and the playing of the Frisco Bowl. Dykes takes over the surging Mustangs’ program from Chad Morris. He left the school to become coach at Arkansas.
That’s not nearly enough time for Dykes to install his Air Raid offense. In this game he will just sit back and let some of the team’s remaining assistants call the game.
SMU is one of only two teams in the country with a 3,000-yard passer, in Ben Hicks, a 1,000-yard rusher, in Xavier Jones and two 1,000 yard receivers in Courtland Sutton and Trey Quinn. Quinn leads the nation in receptions per game at 8.8.
LaTech Became Eligible for DXL Frisco Bowl in Season Finale
LA Tech was a 20-6 winner in their most recent outing at home against UTSA Roadrunners. They covered the +1-point spread as underdogs, while the total score (26) made winners of UNDER bettors.
Louisiana Tech is 6-6 and didn’t become bowl eligible until the regular-season finale versus Texas-San Antonio. There were 81 teams eligible to earn a bowl game invitation. That was three more than the 78 total spots. The Bulldogs ended up one of the fortunate 6-6 teams to be extended an invitation to the postseason game.
Quarterback J’Mar Smith threw for 2,758 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. That includes five scores to Conference USA co-newcomer of the year Teddy Veal. Veal had 69 catches and 832 yards.
Defensively, defensive end Jaylon Ferguson has 26.5 career sacks. He had a team-high six sacks while senior safety Secdrick Cooper had 63 tackles and two interceptions. Cornerback Amik Robertson led the team with four interceptions to go with 58 tackles and two sacks.
