Future Hall of Fame Coaches Square-off in ACC Tournament

The fans at Barclays Center see the Syracuse Orange and the 12th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels play in the late game of the 2018 ACC Tournament. This second round matchup is scheduled to tip-off around 9:30 pm EST. ESPN2 will have the coverage. Oddsmakers have the Tar Heels favored by 7.5 points. The total is sitting at 141. Syracuse won its first game of the ACC Tournament since joining in 2013-14. The Orange knocked off Wake Forest 73-64 on Tuesday in the opening round. The Orange lost to Miami, North Carolina State and Pittsburgh in their other first round matchups. Marek Dolezaj had a outstanding game. He posted a career-high 20 points for his fifth double-digit scoring game this season. Tyus Battle entered the night as one of three ACC players averaging 20-or-more points-per-game. He got off to a fast start. Battle had 12 points in the first 11 minutes. He connected on four of his first five shots from the floor. Battle only had one 3-pointer in the flurry.  He finished with 18 points to join Dolezaj in double figures. Five Orange players scored in double figures.

UNC Has History in ACC Tournament

The Tar Heels are 97-45 in the tournament in the program’s storied history. They played 17 postseason games across the last two years. The totals were nine games in 2016 and eight more last year on their way to a national championship. Carolina has won 18 ACC Tournament championships. The Tar Heels have played in the championship game a record 34 times. UNC’s postseason record the past two years is 15-2. This is the first time UNC has ever been the No. 6 seed in the tourney. This is the 56th time in 65 seasons the Tar Heels have finished in the top three in the ACC regular-season standings. Carolina is 10-4 against Syracuse. They are 6-1 since the Orange joined the ACC. The Tar Heels have won the last six games. This will be the first meeting between the two schools in the ACC Tournament. Joel Berry II is averaging 17.8 points per game. Luke Maye chips in 17.7 ppg as they lead Carolina in scoring. The last time two Tar Heels averaged 17 points or more in the same season was 1983-84. Michael Jordan averaged 19.6 ppg and Sam Perkins scored 17.6ppg. Berry and Maye rank fourth and fifth in scoring in the ACC. The Tar Heels have two of the top five scorers in the ACC for the first time since 2012. Harrison Barnes threw down 17.1 ppg and was third in the league. ACC Player of the Year Tyler Zeller averaged 16.3 ppg and was fifth. Maye is on pace to become the sixth Tar Heel to average a double-double in the last 40 years. The others were Brice Johnson in 2016, John Henson in 2011, Tyler Hansbrough in2008, Sean May in 2005, and Antawn Jamison in1998.
