What Surprises Await in the 2024 NFL Draft
The 2024 NFL Draft is fast approaching and the talent that is available at the top of the draft is very deep. The Draft will be coming live from the “Motor City”, Detroit and promises to be full of surprises. There are rumors abound from all the television talking heads about what teams may or may not do.
The Chicago Bears will lead things off and are expected to take USC quarterback, Caleb Williams. Beyond that it is a crap shoot. The Raiders have tried to trade up to the second pick. The Bengals have had star pass rusher, Trey Hendrickson, request a trade. The three-time Pro Bowl defensive end wants out because of money. Same as teammate Tee Higgins.
One thing is for sure, the fireworks will start shortly before the draft and continue all night. How many QB’s will go in the first round? How many teams will trade up to get “Their Guy”? How many teams will trade down to maximize their haul from the draft? Lots of questions will be answered over the next few days.
Let’s take a look at some other notable prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft:
- Caleb Williams (QB, USC)
- The 2022 Heisman winner is a dual-threat dynamo with a big arm and mobility. Despite a somewhat disappointing season with the Trojans, Williams remains the clear-cut franchise QB option from this class.
- Marvin Harrison Jr. (WR, Ohio State):
- Harrison has the size and speed of a classic No. 1 outside receiver. His physical upside surpasses even that of his Hall-of-Fame father.
- Drake Maye (QB, North Carolina):
- Maye combines accuracy and athleticism, reminiscent of former Tar Heel QB Sam Howell. His ideal frame makes him better equipped to handle pressure at a higher level.
- Malik Nabers (WR, LSU):
- Nabers is a smooth route-runner with good hands and quickness after the catch. He continues LSU’s strong pedigree at the receiver position.
- Joe Alt (OT, Notre Dame):
- Alt’s incredibly nimble feet complement his big frame. He uses his body effectively to move defenders out of the way.
- Jayden Daniels (QB, LSU):
- The reigning Heisman winner is a dual-threat star with elite athleticism and big-play passing flair.
- Rome Odunze (WR, Washington):
- Odunze is a speedy, field-stretching receiver with the potential to make big plays.
- Dallas Turner (EDGE, Alabama):
- Turner stepped up as the premier Crimson Tide pass rusher, filling the void left by Will Anderson Jr.
Sleepers for the 2024 NFL Draft
- Jackson Powers-Johnson (C, Oregon):
- At just 21 years old, Powers-Johnson stands out as one of the youngest offensive linemen in this year’s draft class.
- Despite starting only 17 career games over three seasons at Oregon, he has demonstrated skill and consistency on tape.
- In his first full-time starting season, Powers-Johnson won the prestigious Rimington Trophy for the nation’s top center.
- His standout season includes impressive PFF metrics, allowing only one pressure and zero sacks in 2023.
- Currently ranked as the No. 2 interior offensive line prospect by Next Gen Stats, Powers-Johnson could be selected as early as the end of Day 1 or early Day 2
- Day 3 Hidden Gems:
- While not projected as early-round picks, these players have potential:
- Devontez Walker (WR, Undecided):
- Walker is a true game-breaker with explosive speed and agility. Despite flying under the radar, he has the potential to make a significant impact in the NFL.
- Teams in need of a dynamic playmaker should keep an eye on Walker during the draft1.
- Devontez Walker (WR, Undecided):
- While not projected as early-round picks, these players have potential:
