Washington State in Early Season Pac-12 Showdown
The 5th-ranked USC Trojans and the 16th-ranked Washington State Cougars will meet in a key, early season Pac-12 matchup on Friday at Martin Stadium. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN. Kickoff is set for 10:30 pm EST.
This is a rare spotlight game in Pullman, Wash. Martin Stadium was sold out last week and should be rocking. The 33,000 screaming Cougar fans are hoping to make a difference against the perennial power USC Trojans.
Oddsmakers have the Trojans as 5-point favorites. The total is at 60 after opening at 65.
Washington State off to Best Start Since 2001
Washington State was a 45-7 winner in its last match at home against the Nevada Wolf Pack. They covered the -28.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score of 52 sent UNDER bettors to the payout window.
The Cougars are 4-0 for the first time since 2001. Washington State is outscoring opponents 87-19 in the first half this season.
Washington State senior quarterback Luke Falk completed 36 of 47 pass attempts for 478 yards and five touchdowns against Nevada. The fourth touchdown pass of the day marked the 100th of his career. That TD moved him past former USC quarterback Matt Leinart. It puts him third on the Pac-12’s career list.
Falk has guided Washington State to No. 12 in the nation in scoring. The Cougars’ are averaging almost 44 points per game in Leach’s “Air Raid” attack. Falk has completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 344.1 yards a game with 14 touchdowns and only one interception
Washington State defense ranks No. 1 in the Pac-12 in passing defense. They are only allowing only 142.2 yards per game.
USC Defense is Forcing Turnovers
USC was a 30-20 winner in their most recent outing on the road against the Cal Golden Bears. They failed to cover the -17-point spread as favorites, while the total score (50) made winners of UNDER bettors.
USC has won 13 consecutive games, the nation’s second-longest streak. To continue that streak they can’t start out slow like they have been so far this season. The Trojans have either trailed or been tied in the fourth quarter in three of their four games. The Trojans have outscored opponents 72-38 after three quarters.
The USC defense forced six turnovers against Cal. The Trojans have 11 takeaways. That is the third-most in the nation. Cornerback Jack Jones earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors after picking off two passes against the Golden Bears.
Quarterback Sam Darnold, who some consider a potential No. 1 NFL draft pick in 2018, has come up clutch late in games. He’s also been intercepted seven times this year. This is just two fewer than he made in 10 starts last season.
